Round Table on Sports Dentistry

About this Seminar

What is sports dentistry and how can you build it into your dental practice? This is one of the cornerstones that will be addressed in this lecture. It will start with a history of sports dentistry and evolve into oral cancer/nutritional drinks/supplements /doping guidelines in sport. An in-depth focus on where we are in terms of different types of mouthguards the uses in different sports. We will touch on the pros and cons of each based on scientific data and move into the digital realm of impressions and printed mouthguards. Neuromuscular dentistry and improvement in performance will also be discussed and finally case presentations of dental trauma and treatment will wrap up the presentation. The panel will consist of general dentists from the Academy of sports dentistry involved at the grassroot, major junior hockey, university and NHL/WNBA levels. A true broad spectrum of dental knowledge.

About Dr. Michael Salyzyn

B.Sc., D.D.S.

Dr Michael Salyzyn graduated from Dalhousie University in 1983 B.Sc, 1984, B.Sc honors certificate and DDS 1988. He has been in private practice since 1988 and was appointed the academic position as lecturer in the Department of Community Dentistry at Dalhousie Dentistry for 20 years. Mike has been an avid skier, hockey player and sports enthusiast all his life. He volunteered for the Canadian Ski Patrol locally for the last 20 years and was President of the Canadian Ski Patrol Atlantic East division as well as a current instructor trainer. Mike was always looking for a way to help dentistry and sport support each other. He was successful is authoring a protocol for the Canadian Ski Patrol to treat dental injuries and has presented this to many European ski patrols and has collaborated with the European Academy for Sports Dentistry co authoring a universal dental examination protocol in Sports. He was fortunate enough to be a dentist at the Vancouver Olympic games in 2010 working in the athlete’s village at Whistler. 

That changed his life in many ways and found himself working on educating athletes and dentists on prevention of injuries using a properly fabricated mouthguard as well as teaching dental trauma treatment to the average GP. He has worked with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Ice Hockey Federation(IIHF), FIVB volleyball, numerous U sports final 8 tournaments as well as the Halifax Hurricanes Basketball Team. He has been the Chief Dental Officer for the Canada Winter Games and recently the Chief Dental officer for North American Indigenous Games. (NAIG) He is currently the Dental advisor to the St Mary’s University Athletic program and most recently received the Nova Scotia Dental Association Dr T.D Ingham Volunteer Award for 2023/2024. 

About Dr. E. Jan Chithalen

B.Sc., D.D.S., F.A.S.D., F.I.C.C.M.O

Dr. E. Jan Chithalen B.Sc., D.D.S., F.A.S.D., F.I.C.C.M.O attended McMaster University in Hamilton, and in 1990 received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology (Summa Cum Laude).  

From there he went to Toronto to study in the field of Dentistry and is a 1994 graduate of University of Toronto, with the Degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. After graduation from U of T, Dr. Chithalen spent one year at the Hamilton General Hospital as a Dental Resident and in 1995 began working as an associate with his father, Dr. J.F. Chithalen at 118 Stinson Street. After his father's retirement in 1997, Dr. E.J. Chithalen took over the full-time operation of the clinic on Stinson Street and now offers appointments five days a week.  

He is a member of The Royal College Dental Surgeons, The Ontario Dental Association, The Canadian Dental Association, The Hamilton Dental Academy and a Fellow with the Academy of Sports Dentistry (ASD) - where he currently sits as a Board Member and was recently granted his Fellowship with the International College of Craniomandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO).  

Dr. Chithalen holds the “trifecta” of privilege as the Team Dentist for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats CFL Football team, the Toronto Rock Lacrosse and the Brantford Bulldogs OHL Hockey Team. 

About Dr. Byron M. Blasco

D.M.D.

Byron M. Blasco, D.M.D. graduated from Tufts University, School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts 1985. Having obtained his Bachelor's degree from U.N.L.V. Dr. Blasco returned to Las Vegas and established a private practice.  

Dr. Blasco has focused his practice on cosmetic and implant dentistry. In his pursuit of knowledge and in keeping abreast of the advancements in these fields, Dr. Blasco has well over 3000 hours of continuing education, including a thirteen-month program in Osseo-Integrated implants and advanced training in cosmetic dentistry at LVI with Bill Dickerson & the Aesthetic Advantage with Larry Rosenthal. Dr. Blasco has held a position as a clinical instructor in the anterior and posterior Esthetic Restorative Live Patient hands-on courses at the prestigious Scottsdale / Spear Center for Advanced Dental Studies located in Scottsdale, Arizona. 

Lecturing internationally on dental and facial aesthetics, materials, procedures and techniques including CEREC Cad/Cam technology, VelScope Cancer Detection, Botox & Dermal Fillers, Dr. Blasco is also the President and founding Director of Cornerstone Esthetics, a Continuing Education entity, with PACE approval from the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Blasco’s courses on the Art, Science and Business of Dentistry assist in the development and elevation of the dental practice environment enriching one’s practice, patient care and enable patients to receive the ultimate in care and esthetics while doctors are doing what they love to do with passion, thus enriching the lifestyles of all involved. 

Dr Blasco has a passion for Sports Medicine and serves on the medical staff of the following 12 or professional hockey teams plus baseball and basketball teams.  

Dr Blasco is an active Fellow of the Academy for Sports Dentistry and is the Academy’s current President. Having attended the Annual Symposiums in New Orleans (2018) and lectured at the Annual Symposium in Toronto (2019). As a result of World Situations, the ASD’s Annual Symposiums were attended virtually in 2020 and 2021. 

About Dr. Stasiak

B.Sc., D.M.D.

Dr. Stasiuk graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba in 1987, and in 1995, he attained his DMD degree from the University of Manitoba. A few days later, he joined his father’s dental practice (established in 1962) in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.  

Dr. Stasiuk’s commitment to the Academy for Sports Dentistry began in 1996 when he attended his first ASD Symposium in Minneapolis. His dedication was recognized in 1999 when he was appointed as the ASD Website Coordinator and the Canadian liaison for the ASD. Dr. Stasiuk was the FIMS (International Federation of Sports Medicine) liaison for many years. He currently is involved in several ASD committees. 

Dr. Stasiuk was involved in the 1999 Pan American Games and the 2002 North American Indigenous Games. He started a Sports Dentistry class and Mouthguard Workshop over twenty-five years ago at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Dentistry. He is currently a part-time clinical instructor in the Undergraduate Pediatric Dentistry Clinic at the University of Manitoba. 

In addition to ASD, he is also a member of the Canadian Dental Association, the Manitoba Dental Association, and the Winnipeg Dental Society. He currently serves on the MDA Communications Committee. 

Outside of dentistry, Dr. Stasiuk was very active as a youth coach in football, swimming, soccer, baseball, hockey, and basketball.  His main passion in sports is football. He is also a past Director of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
