Analgesics For Acute Pain Management

About this Seminar

The aim of this session is to provide the practicing dentist with a clinically relevant understanding of the pharmacology of analgesics used for acute post-operative pain in dentistry. The appropriate use of NSAIDs and opioids will be discussed, followed by guidelines for analgesic selection.

About Dr. Daniel Haas

DDS, PhD, FRCD(C)

Daniel Haas, DDS, PhD, FRCD(C), is a professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry. He was Dean at this school from 2012-2022, and prior to that was Associate Dean of Clinical Sciences (2001-2012), and head of its graduate specialty program in dental anaesthesia (1998-2013). He has a cross-appointment with the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine.  

His scholarship has been recognized internationally with the receipt of a number of major awards: the International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Award for Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology research (2004); the Heidbrink Award from the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (2007); the Leonard Monheim Distinguished Service Award of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists for contributions to anesthesiology (2010); and the Horace Wells Award, the highest recognition awarded by the International Federation of Dental Anesthesiology Societies (2018). He has been the only Canadian to win each of these 4 awards. In 2022 he received the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry Distinguished Service Award.  

Professor Haas is the recipient of numerous teaching awards from the University of Toronto and has also played an active role with a number of dental organizations, including the National Dental Examining Board of Canada, the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry, the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, and the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists.
